Dental Bridges vs. Dental Implants: Choosing the Best Way to Restore Your Smile

  Key Takeaways

Dental implants offer the highest long-term survival rates and help preserve the jawbone.

Dental bridges provide a faster, non-surgical solution that typically requires two appointments.

Both options show high success rates over ten years, making them reliable choices for missing teeth.

Costs vary based on materials and complexity, with bridges starting from $3500 and implant components from $4000 at our practice.

Personalised assessments are essential to determine which treatment fits your oral health and budget.

Choosing between a dental bridge and a dental implant involves weighing up your long-term health goals, your lifestyle, and your budget. Both treatments are effective ways to restore function and confidence, but they achieve this in different ways. We recommend booking a comprehensive assessment to discuss which option suits your specific situation.

Which is better: a dental bridge or a dental implant?

The best choice depends on the health of your remaining teeth, the quality of your jawbone, and your personal preferences for treatment time and cost. While dental implants are often considered the gold standard for preserving bone and neighbouring teeth, dental bridges remain a practical and aesthetic solution for many of our patients on the North Shore.

In our experience, patients often feel overwhelmed by the technical details of restorative dentistry. We focus on making these choices straightforward. Whether you are a busy professional in Albany or a retiree looking to maintain your quality of life, understanding the practical differences between these two options is the first step toward a healthy smile.

Understanding Dental Bridges on the North Shore

A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by using the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors. We prepare these neighbouring teeth for crowns and then cement a custom-made restoration over them. This creates a literal bridge across the space. Most of our

are crafted from high-quality porcelain to ensure they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.

The process is relatively quick. It typically requires two appointments with about a week to ten days of laboratory time in between. During that week, you wear a temporary bridge so you can continue to eat and smile normally. We work with the best dental laboratories in Auckland to ensure your final bridge is durable and fits perfectly. This option is often preferred by those who want to avoid surgery or who have existing crowns on the teeth next to the gap that need replacing anyway.

The Role of Dental Implants in Modern Dentistry

Dental implants take a different approach by replacing the root of the tooth as well as the crown. We place a small titanium fixture into the jawbone, which then heals and integrates with the bone. Once stable, this fixture supports a ceramic crown. This method is particularly effective because it leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched and provides the stimulation your jawbone needs to stay healthy and strong.

by partnering with leading surgeons for the placement of the titanium fixture and using top-tier laboratories for the final crown. For patients who have lost a front tooth due to an accident, we can often assist with ACC-funded treatment. We handle the paperwork to make the process as stress-free as possible for you.

How long do bridges and implants last?

A common concern we hear is that bridges fail quickly or that implants are a permanent, indestructible fix. The reality is that both are high-survival options, though their risk profiles differ slightly over time. Evidence helps us set realistic expectations for our patients.

A 2023 meta-analysis by CADTH (the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health, an organisation that reviews medical evidence) looked at tooth-supported all-ceramic bridges. They reported survival rates of approximately

. This shows that bridges are a very reliable medium-to-long-term solution. The same review noted an overall annual survival rate of 96.4 percent, which reflects the high standards of modern dental materials.

Implants do tend to have a slight edge over very long periods. A ten-year prospective study following 200 patients found a

compared to 88.2 percent for preserved natural teeth. Interestingly, the study found no statistically significant difference between the two (P = 0.172), meaning both are excellent choices when planned correctly. Success depends heavily on factors like your gum health, whether you smoke, and your daily hygiene habits.

  Comparing the Costs of Treatment

Financial considerations are a significant part of the decision-making process for North Shore families. At Albany Village Dental, we believe in transparency regarding fees. Our current prices for individual crowns range from $1200 to $1600 depending on the material used. A dental bridge starts from $3500, with the final cost depending on the length and design of the restoration. For those considering implants, the restorative component (the implant crown and abutment) starts from $4000.

It is helpful to look at these figures within the wider Auckland context. General benchmarks in the region suggest that a

  Practical Considerations for Your Lifestyle

Beyond the clinical data, your daily life matters. Implants are known for their stability, often restoring about 90 percent of natural chewing force. This is a significant improvement over traditional removable options. Because an implant functions like a natural tooth, you can brush and floss it just like the rest of your smile. Bridges require a slightly different cleaning routine, using specialized floss to clean under the artificial tooth, which is a small but important daily commitment.

We've seen this happen when patients choose a bridge for its speed: they are back to full function within a fortnight. For others, the surgical aspect of an implant is a deterrent, or their medical history makes a bridge the safer, more practical choice. We take the time to discuss these lifestyle factors with you during your consultation.

Let's be direct. For many Kiwis, the thought of visiting the dentist brings up one major concern: the cost. You're not alone in feeling this way. In fact, startling new data from the New Zealand Health Survey shows that

Here at Albany Village Dental, we see the real-world impact of these statistics every day. We talk to people from across the North Shore who have put off a check-up for too long, turning a small issue into a more complex and expensive problem. Our mission is to change that narrative. We believe high-quality dental care should be accessible, not a luxury. This guide is our way of helping you understand the financial side of your oral health. It’s a straightforward look at the different ways you can pay for dental treatment, from insurance and government help to flexible payment plans.

Why Does Quality Dental Care Have a High Cost in NZ?

It’s a fair question. Why isn’t a dental filling treated the same as a visit to your GP? Unlike general medical care, most adult dental treatment in New Zealand is not subsidised by the government. The cost reflects the reality of running a modern dental practice: the use of highly specialised equipment, advanced sterilisation protocols to ensure your safety, high-quality materials designed to last for years, and of course, the extensive training and expertise of your dentist and their team.

Think of it as an investment in your overall well-being. Good oral health is directly linked to your general health. But we understand that doesn't make the bill any easier to look at. That’s why understanding your payment options is so powerful.

Demystifying Your Payment Options: A Clear Path Forward

Navigating the financial side of dental care can feel confusing. But it doesn't have to be. We’ve broken down the four main pathways that help our patients manage the cost of their treatment. We see ourselves as your partners in this, here to provide clarity and support so you can get the care you need without undue stress.

1\. ACC: Cover for Dental Injuries Caused by an Accident

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is a name most Kiwis are familiar with, but many don't realise it can apply to dental work. If you need dental treatment because of an accident, an injury, or even as the result of medical treatment, ACC may be able to help cover the cost.

What does this look like in practice? It could be a chipped tooth from a fall, a broken tooth during a weekend sports game, or a dental injury from a car accident. The key is that the damage is the direct result of a specific event.

    How the ACC process works:

      Visit an ACC Accredited Dentist:

The first step is to see a registered dentist, like our team at Albany Village Dental. We'll assess the injury and determine the necessary treatment.

      We Help with the Claim:

We will help you complete the required ACC claim form and submit it on your behalf.

      Treatment Can Begin:

In most straightforward cases, we can begin treatment right away. ACC will then contribute towards the cost of your care.

In our experience, it’s important for patients to know that ACC typically covers a portion of the treatment cost, not the entire amount. You will likely have a co-payment. However, this contribution can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expense for things like an emergency examination, x-rays, fillings, or even a dental crown needed to repair a damaged tooth.

2\. Work and Income (WINZ): Financial Assistance for Urgent Dental Treatment

For individuals and families on a low income or a benefit, Work and Income (WINZ) can provide financial assistance for urgent dental needs. The focus here is on "immediate and essential dental treatment" – work that is required to address pain, infection, or serious oral health problems.

If you're struggling with a painter toothache or a broken tooth and are worried about the cost, this is an avenue worth exploring. The assistance is often provided as a grant, which means in many cases it doesn't need to be paid back. There is a limit to how much can be claimed within a 52-week period.

How to apply for a WINZ grant:

      Get a Quote:

You’ll need a quote from a WINZ Registered Provider. We are registered with WINZ and can provide you with all the necessary paperwork detailing the treatment needed and the associated cost.

      Apply to WINZ:

You then take this quote and apply for the grant through Work and Income.

      Get the Green Light:

Once WINZ approves the grant, you can book your appointment and get the treatment underway.

This process can be a lifeline for those who need to get out of pain but simply don't have the funds available. It typically covers procedures like an extraction or a filling to resolve an immediate issue.

3\. Private Health Insurance: Using Your Policy for Dental Care

If you have a private health insurance policy, it’s well worth checking your dental benefits. Many comprehensive health insurance plans include cover for dental treatment, or it can be added as part of an "everyday health" module. These plans are designed to help you budget for routine healthcare costs.

As a provider affiliated with Southern Cross, we regularly help patients utilise their insurance for their dental care. Policies vary, but they generally allow you to claim back a percentage of your costs up to an annual limit. This can cover a wide range of services, including:

Sometimes, necessary dental work comes with a significant price tag, even with help from ACC or insurance. A dental implant or crown, for example, is a major investment. This is where payment plans can make all the difference, removing the need for a large upfront payment.

We offer Q Card to give our patients a practical way to manage their dental costs. It’s a form of "buy now, pay later" specifically for healthcare and other large purchases. At our clinic, we offer 12 months interest-free on treatments.

This is a game-changer. We've seen how a $1,500 crown becomes much more manageable when it's broken down into payments of $125 a month. It means you don't have to delay essential treatment that could prevent more serious issues down the line. It empowers you to say "yes" to the best treatment plan for your health, not just the one that you can afford to pay for in full on the day.

Investing in regular preventative care is the smartest financial decision you can make for your oral health. In 2025 A full dental exam with us, including x-rays, is just $80. These appointments allow us to catch potential problems like early tooth decay when it might only require a small filling (starting from $250), rather than waiting until it requires a complex root canal or crown (ranging from $1200 to $1600).

There are several options available to make essential dental care more affordable. If you are on a low income or benefit, we recommend investigating a grant from WINZ for urgent treatment. For larger, planned procedures, a payment plan like Q Card can spread the cost into manageable monthly instalments. And if your dental issue is the result of an accident, an ACC claim can significantly reduce the expense. Above all, preventative care is the best way to avoid large, unexpected costs in the future.

Is dental insurance worth it in NZ?

Whether dental insurance is worth it depends entirely on your individual needs and circumstances. For people who want to budget for their regular dental care and have peace of mind knowing their check-ups, cleans, and occasional fillings are covered, it can be extremely valuable. If you anticipate needing more extensive work, such as orthodontics or multiple crowns, it's vital to read the policy details carefully to understand the annual limits, waiting periods, and what procedures are included.

No, ACC typically covers a portion of the cost for dental injuries resulting from an accident. The patient is almost always responsible for a co-payment. The amount ACC contributes is set according to a schedule of costs for specific dental treatments, so the portion you pay will vary depending on the complexity of the work required to repair the injury.

  What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap designed to completely cover a damaged tooth. Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth. We often recommend crowns when a tooth is significantly weakened, cracked, heavily filled, or has undergone a root canal treatment. A crown restores the tooth's original shape, size, strength, and appearance, providing essential protection and improving its overall function. To learn more about our custom dental crowns, you can visit our dedicated service page.

  What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a reliable solution for replacing one or more missing teeth. It "bridges" the gap created by missing teeth by anchoring a replacement tooth (or teeth) to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap. This not only restores your ability to chew and speak properly but also helps maintain the shape of your face and prevents remaining teeth from shifting. For urgent cases involving front teeth, we can provide a faster service with our local laboratories, ensuring you don't have to wait long for a complete smile. If you'd like to learn more about dental bridges, we have a detailed page dedicated to this treatment.

When Do We Recommend Crowns and Bridges?

We consider crowns and bridges for a variety of dental issues:

      Severely Cracked or Fractured Teeth:

A crown can hold a cracked tooth together, preventing further damage.

      Weakened Teeth:

After a large filling or root canal, a crown provides strength and prevents breakage.

      Misshapen or Discoloured Teeth:

Crowns can dramatically improve the aesthetics of a tooth.

      Missing Teeth:

Bridges are an excellent option for replacing one or more missing teeth, restoring both function and appearance.

We work with the best dental laboratories in Auckland, with prompt finishing times, and best quality of workmanship, ensuring we offer a range of high-quality options tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Here are some of the materials we commonly use:

Known for its natural, tooth-like appearance, porcelain crowns and bridges are excellent for front teeth where aesthetics are paramount. All-ceramic crowns, often made of porcelain, have a 75-80% survival rate at 10 years.

      Zirconia:

This material is incredibly strong and durable, making it ideal for back teeth that endure significant chewing forces. Monolithic Zirconia crowns show a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 86.0%.

These restorations offer a good balance of strength and aesthetics, with a metal base for durability and a porcelain layer for a natural look. PFM crowns have a 90% survival rate at 10 years.

      Gold Alloys:

While less common for aesthetic reasons, gold crowns are exceptionally strong and biocompatible. Gold crowns enjoy a 96% survival rate at 10 years, making them one of the most durable options available.

We often get asked about how long a dental crown should last. On average, dental crowns can endure anywhere from 5 to 15 years, contingent on several factors. These factors encompass the crown material, the patient's oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, and any tendencies such as teeth grinding or clenching. With proper care, including regular six-month cleanings and check-ups, a traditional bridge can last 30 to 40 years.

  The Process: What to Expect

Getting a crown or bridge typically involves a few appointments:

      Initial Consultation and Preparation:

We'll conduct a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess your oral health and determine if a crown or bridge is the right solution. If so, we'll prepare the tooth (or teeth) by reshaping it to allow for the crown or bridge placement.

While crowns and bridges are built to be durable, their longevity largely depends on how well you care for them. In our practice, we’ve seen that excellent oral hygiene is the most significant factor. We recommend:

How to Choose the Best Dentist in Albany: A North Shore Guide

  Key Takeaways

When choosing a dentist, look beyond simple convenience and consider factors like the range of services, the technology used, and the experience of the dental team.

A great family dental practice should offer comprehensive services, from routine check-ups and hygiene to cosmetic dentistry and emergency care.

Check for a clinic's commitment to patient comfort, personalised care, and clear communication, which you can often gauge from genuine patient reviews.

Ensure the practice has provisions for dental emergencies and offers flexible hours that can accommodate your family's schedule.

Choosing a new dentist for your family can feel like a significant decision, and it should. This isn't just about finding the closest clinic in Albany or on the North Shore; it's about finding a long-term partner for your family's health and wellbeing. But with so many options, how do you make the right choice? It starts by understanding what truly matters in quality dental care.

The need for a reliable dental partner is more critical than many realise. Preventable dental issues remain a significant concern across the country. According to a 2025 report from the New Zealand Dental Association, in 2023/2024 alone,

321,000 adults and 31,000 children had teeth removed

due to decay, abscesses, or gum disease. This statistic highlights the importance of proactive, high-quality dental care in preventing serious problems down the line. This guide is designed to help you look past the marketing and focus on the factors that will ensure your family receives the best possible care.

Why Your Choice of Dentist Matters More Than You Think

A good dentist does more than just fix problems as they arise. They become a trusted advisor who understands your family’s dental history, helping you prevent issues before they start. This relationship is built on trust, expertise, and a shared commitment to your health. In an environment where standards are paramount, choosing a reputable and trustworthy professional is crucial. This is especially relevant given recent reports of a

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dentist on the North Shore

To make an informed decision, we recommend focusing on a few core pillars of a quality dental practice. Moving beyond location and looking at these aspects will help you find a clinic that truly fits your family's needs.

    1. A Comprehensive Range of Services

Life is busy, and managing multiple appointments at different locations for various family members is an unnecessary complication. A great family dental practice should act as a central hub for all your oral health needs. Before committing, check that the clinic offers a broad spectrum of treatments. A key sign of a great family practice is one that provides a

The qualifications and experience of the dental team are non-negotiable, but their approach to patient care is just as important. Do they take the time to listen to your concerns? Do they explain procedures clearly and make you feel at ease? A positive "chair-side manner" can transform the dental experience, especially for anxious patients or children. At Albany Village Dental, we are incredibly proud of our team's blend of skill and compassion. We invite you to

    3. Modern Technology and Techniques

The field of dentistry is constantly evolving, and modern technology plays a huge role in improving diagnostics, treatment outcomes, and patient comfort. A clinic that invests in up-to-date equipment demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest standard of care. For example, technology like digital dentistry and 3D oral scanning, which we utilise here at Albany Village Dental, allows for more precise diagnoses and treatment planning. This means less time in the chair, more comfortable procedures, and better long-term results for you and your family. We use 3D scanners to get models of teeth, which allow more precision in planning and lab work fitting.

    4. Availability and Emergency Care

A toothache or a broken tooth doesn't wait for a convenient time. One of the most important questions to ask a potential new dental clinic is how they handle emergencies. Do they have dedicated appointment slots for urgent cases? Is there a clear process for getting care after hours? Beyond emergencies, consider the clinic's regular hours. Look for a practice that offers flexible appointment times, including weekend availability, to fit around your work, school, and family commitments. Convenience shouldn't be the only factor, but it certainly helps.

    5. Genuine Patient Reviews and Testimonials

Word of mouth is a powerful tool. Before making your final decision, take some time to read online reviews and testimonials from current patients. Look beyond the star ratings and read the comments. Are patients talking about feeling comfortable and well-cared for? Do they mention the dentists by name? Do the reviews reflect a practice that is friendly, professional, and communicative? This firsthand feedback can provide invaluable insight into the true patient experience at a clinic.

  What About Dental Costs?

We understand that cost is a practical and important consideration for every family. When it comes to dental care, costs can vary widely depending on the type of treatment you need. A simple check-up will cost less than a complex procedure like a root canal or a dental implant. Rather than focusing on finding the absolute cheapest option, we encourage you to look for value. This means fair pricing combined with high-quality, lasting care. At our clinic, we believe in being transparent about costs, and we encourage visitors to check our specials page for any current bargains that might be available.

  The Professional Clean (Dental Hygiene)

Unless you have urgent issues needing immediate attention, your first visit often includes a professional clean by a dental hygienistor the dentist. This is more thorough than your daily brushing and flossing.

                  The clean typically involves:

Regular professional cleans are fundamental for maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing gum disease and decay.

  Understanding Dental Costs in NZ

Cost is understandably a concern for many people when going to the dentist. We aim to be transparent and provide affordable dental care without compromising quality.

How much does a dentist cost in NZ?

The cost of dental services in New Zealand, including Auckland, varies significantly depending on the specific dental treatment required, the complexity, the materials used, and the individual dental clinic. A basic check-up and clean might range from approximately $150 to $250, while fillings, crowns, root canal therapy, or dental implants will cost more. It's best to get a specific quote from your chosen dentist after an examination. We strive to offer reasonable price points and affordable prices for our community.

How can I manage dental costs?

We understand that managing dental expenses is important. We offer several ways to help make dental care more accessible:

How much does Winz pay for dental?

The amount WINZ contributes towards dental costs depends on your individual circumstances and the specific grant you qualify for. Often, there's a limit (e.g., up to $1000 per year for emergency/essential treatment), but this can vary. It typically covers necessary treatments to relieve pain, address infection, or restore basic function, often requiring a quote from the dentist. We can provide the necessary documentation for your WINZ application.

Is free dental care available in NZ?

Basic dental care is generally free for children and adolescents in NZ up until their 18th birthday through the publicly funded system (check eligibility criteria). For adults, there is limited public funding, usually restricted to low-income individuals requiring emergency care, often accessed through Community Service Card holder lists at specific District Health Board (Papakura example mentioned for regional context, but not our primary service area) clinics, and may involve waiting lists. Private Auckland dentists like Albany Village Dental primarily operate on a fee-for-service basis, though we support access through WINZ and ACC.

Specific Dental Services You Might Discuss

Flexible dentures are virtually ‘unbreakable'; however, the teeth are not. They are susceptible to breaking or being ‘popped off’ from the plate.

Q: ‘A denture tooth has popped off/ cracked/ chipped/Fix False Teeth. Can you fix this?’

A: Yes–if the broken part is either the teeth or acrylic (plastic). Flexible and metal framework are generally unrepairable. Dentures at Albany Village dental are treated with special care:

Broken denture –fracture is crisp and can be put back together by hand. The repair is quick and easy. Do not attempt to super glue them back together yourself. This will make repair more difficult. A quick repair service can take a minimum of one hour to complete as long as it does not need to be sent to our laboratory. If an impression needs to be taken, then it is highly recommended as to not compromise the fit. This repair generally takes longer. Minimum 3 hours and more if sent out. This is considered to be the quickest time of denture repair in North Shore.

Cracked denture – not broken all the way through. Repair time minimum 1 hour or more if sent out. Best to assess the cause of the crack to prevent re-occurrence.

Broken or chipped tooth – if the damage is minimal we can smoothen sharp edges for an adjustment fee. If the entire tooth needs to be replaced, then this can take a minimum of 4 hours (if tooth in stock) and again more if sent out.

Broken clasp – an impression may need to be taken to allow us to fabricate a new clasp to wrap around the abutment (holding onto) tooth. Repair time minimum 4 hours and more if sent out.

Tooth popped off flexible denture – repair can be done but will take about 4-5 days.

Why are flexible and metal plates not repairable?

Flexible dentures are virtually ‘unbreakable'; however, the teeth are not. They are susceptible to breaking or being ‘popped off’ from the plate. This is because the teeth and flexible nylon material are not compatible. They are bound together only by mechanical interlock with grooves and holes through the neck of the tooth. Correctly re-adding a tooth onto a flexible is rebasing the entire plate.

Metal framework will need to be replaced. Soldering is not cost effective. The acrylic part can be repaired or added onto metal substructures.

Zoom Teeth Whitening At Home

At Albany Village Dental we offer two main types of teeth whitening systems, the first is the at home system and the second is in office Zoom whitespeed , which is one of the few genuine Zoom teeth whitening systems on the North Shore.

The At home Zoom whitening system is relatively simple, it involves obtaining impressions from your upper and lower teeth, then custom made whitening trays are fabricated. We also supply you with a whiting kit and material, and provide the needed training to use it to get the optimum whitening result.

Over the long experience from using the Zoom whitening systems we found having properly spaced trays get better faster results to we have our own way of fabricating the whitening trays. They also have less chances of overfilling, a mistake that is very common in using the whitening trays, especially when no training is given to clients upon supplying them with whitening materials.

In addition to our comprehensive training, we provide you with a link to clinical demonstration,

The best timing for the common Zoom whitening concentration we use is about an hour and a half daily use over seven days, ten days will be the maximum needed time especially for difficult cases. We also recommend keeping the trays in a cold clean environment inside their pouches, as a two day maintenance every 4-6 months will keep the result if not even improve it with time. We provide our clients with refill syringes after the initial kit runs out which is usually around a year time. The refill is a cost effective way as well.

Most whitening materials have around one year of shelf life, and they should not be used beyond that date, and they won’t be as effective anyway past that time. The Zoom Whitening system is made in USA, and the most shelf life we get on it is 12- 13 months. Hence we always stock small amount s and make sure we get it as fresh as possible for our clients. If not in stock we usually get it to you overnight, which is by the time the custom made trays are fabricated usually.

The Zoom at home whitening kit is the recommended way for clients who had at office whitening system done in the past two years and then like a bit of maintenance or even get further whitening.

Unfortunately teeth whitening systems are poorly regulated at the current time, leading to fake and replicas been sold over the internet and on social media, these can harm your teeth, and some of them use bleaching materials, which can result in grey to translucent shade of white, rather than actual teeth whitening . Our advice is to make sure that your provider is a dental professional, and what they are using is a reputable brand.

So if you after some whiter pearly whites, then give us a call or contact us on our website and we will find the best way to get you the optimum whiting result , using a reputable patented material and system, with very competitive prices.

The Broken Filling

It’s frequent and common in occurrence, to have been eating on something too hard, or not expected to be included with the food...

What to do with your broken filling

It’s frequent and common in occurrence, to have been eating on something too hard, or not expected to be included with the food, and the freighting crack sound will appear, announcing broken filling, or broken tooth or a mix of both options.

Foreign objects in food, food that is too dry, frozen, or even bad baits of biting on hard objects are all common causes of broken teeth.

This situation can be as simple as a small chip of the restoration, and in such case it might not cause any pain, and sometimes the chipped filling gets swallowed , and I have seen a few people who would not notice the missing part, till it gets pick up on the next routine check up.

The broken tooth filling can get more involving , and cause the inner side of the tooth to be exposed , which will cause the affected tooth to be sensitive to temperature changes . Such a case will require an immediate action of replacing that filling, or even getting a temporary filling arranged, till a further treatment can be done.

It can also be involving a bigger part of the tooth, and extending to the nerve part, which will cause severe pain almost instantly , due to the sudden change after the mechanical fracture, in more complicated cases the tooth itself can be cracked, or the root can be fractured , which is a catastrophic event for the tooth itself.

The most common option to restore a broken filling is to have the filling replaced, when there is no much tooth structure to restore, a crown of chosen material might be the ideal option for a longer term restoration. In those cases when the nerve part of the tooth is affected , a root canal treatment might be required before having a crown over the tooth. Or the worse possible when the root of the tooth is broken , affecting the foundation of the tooth, in that case a tooth extraction might be the only treatment option.

BPS stands for Bio-functional Prosthetic System and BPS dentures distinguishes itself from standard dentures as they are made by only products from Ivoclar Vivodent brand. These include and not limited to materials and equipment used for primary impressions of the mouth, secondary impressions, composition of and the teeth arrangement, and injection type of acrylic (plastic).

          BPS dentures

different to other practices that also provide BPS dentures?

Many dental clinics and laboratories are BPS certified, however, additional principles and components are not incorporated whilst fabricating a set of top and bottom dentures. These result in numerous sore spots and adjustments required after the dentures have been delivered and fitted. They are "uncomfortable and don’t seem to work like the old pairs do."

These principles are namely: the bilateral balanced occlusion, or the lingualised balanced occlusion; and the component: the Ivoclar Vivodent tooth set-up guide plane. The guide plane itself is not required to achieve the balanced occlusal concepts but assists the technician to achieve it much easier. Other professionals may argue the 'face bow' is important which is a huge crane-like device that sits on your face locating your ear, jaw, nose bridge in relation to your upper jaw to simulate the individual's jaw movements. However, many users do not use it to the full capacity making it near redundant and time consuming.

Albany Village Dental Centre make sure to include all these principles and use these components to eliminate sore spots and limit the need for an adjustment.

No adjustment or sore spots from new dentures?

It all lies in the teeth arrangement. Most if not all clinicians are able to produce outstanding mouth impressions and capture relatively good top and bottom jaw relationships called the bite registration. However, it is the jagged teeth association between the top and bottom jaw that causes sore spots. Most technicians or clinicians who set up their teeth do so in just an upwards and downwards motion. The human jaw does not work simply in an up and down motion. We chew. This involves sideways, forward, back and circular motion. Compensating Curves (Curve of Spee, Curve of Wilson, Sphere of Monson) are introduced into dentures in order to simulate a smooth circular motion. Within reason, at any one point all teeth cusps are in contact with the top and bottom dentures simultaneously creating an even distribution of chewing forces.

Simultaneous teeth contacts distribute even pressure on your gums preventing sore spots. This is called balanced occlusion.

Provided the food you eat is not rock solid and chew on both sides at the same time, no concentrated pressure point occurs that arises in these sore spots that can lead to aggravating ulcers.

          Denture teeth are individually placed

Denture-wearers may have heard clinicians/technician say, "the teeth are individually placed". As of 2019, in New Zealand and Australia, almost all dental clinics and laboratories still individually place their teeth as technology is still lacking refinement. If the principles and component mentioned above are not used, then even the highest quality materials used on the most expensive dentures do not result in a marked improvement in comfort or function as one would have wished for as compared to the lowest grade of materials used in a similar manner.

Our Bio-functional Prosthetic System Dentures and superior ranges have a teeth arrangement different than most other denture makers. This specialised teeth arrangement is called balanced occlusion.

Single top or bottom dentures do not require special teeth arrangement as your own teeth determines and limits the denture teeth placement. Single BPS dentures differ from standard dentures purely in their quality and branding. However, a BPS top AND bottom set of dentures differ in that way as they require to work in harmony with each other.

Disharmony is the cause of sore spots like a vehicle on a gravel road as compared to a nicely smoothed tar-sealed road. In this manner, a single top or bottom set of dentures are not in harmony with your own teeth hence the need for adjustments to minimize this disharmony.

Why do other practices not use balanced occlusion?

All dental professionals have been taught or have come across the phenomenon but do not practice it. Some do not see it as necessary or simply they cannot achieve it due to biological or technical reasons. Tradition methods have sufficed without significant issues. Balanced occlusion is relatively difficult to muster, and many do not have the equipment and/or the skill. It is time consuming and somewhat an expensive practice, hence, the most acceptable justification of the cost other than the higher quality of materials.
